Academic Decathalon
Academic Decathlon
The Academic Decathlon is a nine-member team competition that gives students the opportunity to match their intellects with students from other schools. A team consists of nine full-time students from the ninth through twelfth grades of the same high school. Each team is made up of three Honor students (3.75-4.0 GPA), three Scholastic students (3.0-3.74 GPA), and three Varsity students (0.0-2.9 GPA).
Students are tested in ten categories: Art, Economics, Essay, Interview, Language and Literature, Mathematics, Music, Science, Social Science, and Speech. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals are awarded for individual events and total scores. Winning teams advance through the local, regional, and state levels of competition. The state champions compete at the national finals.
Having last competed in 2005, this year So. El Monte H.S. participated in its second year of Academic Decathlon competition. In written and speaking exam categories, the team placed 6th in our Division, and we placed 4th in the Super Quiz event.
